Should we work together to save the word "Conspiracy" from the slanderous fate of the word "Socialism"?

It seem that the term "conspiracy" in the US has taken on an added meaning of "crackpot" and that conspiracy is more a term used to insult the intelligence of others than: "2 or more people secretly working together to commit a crime" as the actual definition goes. It seems almost as if it has come to the point where conspiracy = impossible fairytale. Obviously the Obama is a Kenyan, Muslim terrorist theory and the Haiti was hit by US satellite beams causing an Earthquake theory are crazy, but should that garbage be allowed to twist the definition of conspiracy to the point where governments merely need to claim anything said as a "conspiracy so the people will drop it instantly for fear of looking kooky?
